The CHARM Farm Feed Requirements
We are presently making hay for the 2010-2011 winter season. We will update you with any additional requirements once this is complete.
Large animals, like horses for example, need a considerable volume of feed to get them through the cold winter months. Though they are sheltered from the elements, they still need to eat a good deal of hay to keep their body temperature at optimum. Since many of the animals we get are in need of higher nutrition than most due to poor health or past poor diet, we make certain to only supply our animals with the best hay we can obtain.
To date we have been feeding the animals completely out of pocket. We have acquired/made enough hay to last well into the winter months, with more on order awaiting pick up. We presently can not take in any more animals and will remain at that status until we have a surplus of feed and can reasonably expect to obtain more. Our loft is nearly full of small square bales that we made ourselves and we have acquired 8 large round bales of hay, but we still need more feed to last the winter.
This year has been a particularly bad year for hay crops in Saskatchewan, and as a result, the costs for hay have risen significantly. The shortage and higher prices will also lead to a much higher demand for our services. We have already been turning away animals that have been offered up for surrender to us as we presently maintain as many animals as we can reasonably afford out of pocket.
With your assistance, we can be ready to facilitate another 15 - 50 more animals this winter (depending on species - 7 goats can be kept in place of 1 horse). Without some outside support, we will only be able to maintain the animals we presently have.

Current Projects
We recently obtained over 100 acres of hay to cut and bale for winter feed. This should cover our needs for the year.
We need to haul in several truckloads of gravel for the floor of our steel quonset where we want to store our hay and equipment.
We have several hundred feet of corral to remove from a farm near us and rebuild here on The CHARM Farm.
